Smitten by Alice, however, and perhaps somewhat wracked with guilt, Thorne returns to Tecala to help carry out the rescue on his own time. The company barely cooperates—Alice has to lie to the local company representative to convince him to take action that ultimately permits Thorne to go in, guns blazing, and rescue Bowman.
