PLAINTIFF alleged defendant Health and Hospital Corp. failed to prevent an extravasation, or leakage, of intravenous fluids into plaintiff’s right forearm and failed to provide proper treatment following the extravasation. Defendant moved for summary judgment, arguing there was no issue of fact on either of the claims presented. The court agreed that movant showed plaintiff has no claim that concentrated glucose should not have extravasated into her arm. It noted extravasation was a known risk of intravenous administration of fluids and not a result of medical negligence. The court found plaintiff was brought to the emergency room in critical condition and rapid intravenous administration of glucose was necessary to save her life. It stated extravasation was an event that could neither be predicted nor avoided. Thus, as there was no question plaintiff needed the glucose administered intravenously to save her life, and because extravasation of it was a known, yet predictable risk, plaintiff could not demonstrate medical negligence.
