On the same day President Barack Obama gave a Wall Street speech about the government’s expanded role in trying to curb the economic crisis, an original copy of the first document to codify the legal principles binding taxpayers and government went on display just blocks away.

“The Magna Carta is a document that testifies to the rule of law,” The Very Reverend Philip Buckler, dean of England’s Lincoln Cathedral, which houses the document, said yesterday in an interview. “How fascinating that today, your president talked about how none of us should be fooled into thinking that we are above the law of the land, or economic laws.”
