Judge Gerard E. Maney, the Family Court supervising judge for the Third Judicial District, must pay $560 in fines and surcharges and attend drinking-and-driving and victim-impact programs after pleading guilty to driving while ability impaired. Authorities said they arrested the judge last month after he made a U-turn away from a sobriety checkpoint in Albany County. He was found to have a 0.07 percent blood alcohol level, just below the 0.08 percent threshold for driving while intoxicated (NYLJ, June 22).

Judge Maney, 59, pleaded guilty Tuesday before Green Island Town Justice Joseph Liotta. Albany County Assistant District Attorney Mary Tanner-Richter called Judge Maney’s penalties the result of a “standard plea” for defendants in his circumstances. He waived the right to appeal, Ms. Tanner-Richter said. His attorney, Joseph McCoy of Albany, issued a statement apologizing for the judge’s conduct and promising to learn from the “humble lessons” of his arrest. Judge Maney has been an Albany County Family Court judge since 1991 and a district supervisory judge for Family Court in northeastern New York since 2002. He has continued in his duties since his arrest.
