It may seem like years ago now, but in the months leading up to Hamas’ Oct. 7 surprise attack on Israel, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government was engaged in a fight to overhaul the country’s judiciary that drew hundreds of thousands of Israelis to the streets to protest.

The effort was put on hold as Israel waged war against Hamas, but last month the Israel Supreme Court dealt a serious blow to the reform push, issuing a split ruling that threw out a law that the country’s far-right government passed last July that stripped away the high court’s authority to apply a “reasonableness” standard to government actions.
