After less than three hours of deliberations Tuesday, a nine-person jury found that former President Donald Trump is liable for sexual abuse—but not for rape—and defamation of the writer E. Jean Carroll and awarded her $5 million in damages.

Carroll, who has accused Trump of raping her in a Bergdorf Goodman dressing room in the mid-1990s, sued Trump under New York’s Adult Survivors Act, which opened a one-year window for adult survivors of sexual abuse to bring claims that would otherwise be time-barred, in November 2022. She also brought a defamation claim against Trump for an October post on his social media platform Truth Social.
