What are your proudest accomplishments in the area of diversity and inclusion in law? I feel privileged to serve a community that has until now been ignored—Asian American immigrants living on society’s margins—and to help be a voice for this community at a time when there has been surge in hate-driven violence.

I’m also proud that we are working in a direct way that changes lives. Historically, BigLaw has approached pro bono in a limited, practice-specific way, via referrals from authorities or legal aid groups. Because of that, people who distrust U.S. authorities—undocumented immigrants who don’t speak English—often won’t or can’t access the help they need. Many have never paid taxes, don’t have email, and some may be illiterate, even in Chinese. These clients find us via word of mouth. They know that we will take care of them, and that we are directly accountable to them.
