Asim Rehman, whose experience in the public sector includes a stint as general counsel for the government watchdog for the New York City Police Department, was recognized as the city’s chief administrative law judge on July 6 in a formal swearing-in ceremony.

Rehman, who is both the first Muslim-American and person of South Asian descent to be named commissioner of the Office of Administrative Trials and Hearings (OATH) and its chief administrative judge, officially took office in March. The ceremonial swearing-in was held four months later so the historic nature of Rehman’s appointment to the post could be highlighted, an OATH spokesperson said.
