State lawmakers are once again trying to persuade the New York Court of Appeals to adopt a diploma privilege option that would allow law graduates to be licensed without taking the bar exam—after their legislative approach appears to have failed.

A Sept. 15 letter to Chief Judge Janet DiFiore signed by 43 New York senators and assemblymembers expressed serious security and equity concerns about the plan to administer an online bar exam Oct. 5 and 6, and said the toll that the uncertainty surrounding the test has taken on law graduates in “immeasurable.”
