Event venues in western New York are suing state officials in federal court, arguing that a 50-person limit on nonessential gatherings has deprived them of property and liberty rights.

The lawsuit from the businesses, filed on Friday in the federal Western District of New York, seeks declaratory judgment, injunctive relief and damages. It cites violations of the equal protection clause under the Fourteenth Amendment and violations of the substantive due process clause under the Fifth and Fourteenth Amendments.
