Buffalo, New York-based Goldberg Segalla, which just opened its first California location in Los Angeles early this year, has continued to expand on the West Coast by adding an office in Orange County.
The new office is staffed by five workers’ compensation specialists and boasts ties to major league sports—including, in one case, 344 career tackles in the National Football League.
The outpost is led by partner Joshua Roberts, who joined from Pearlman, Brown & Wax, a California firm that focuses on workers’ compensation defense, employment law and sports litigation cases. Roberts said his practice and the firm’s focus on growing in the Southern California area were a good match.
Also joining the firm is partner Joshua Mauras, who was at Goldman, Magdalin & Krikes.
“It gives me the opportunity to expand this firm, and expand my practices as well,” said Roberts, who was a senior associate at his former firm. Joining with him from Pearlman Brown are associates Pamela Aaron and Lisa Hardebeck and hearing representative Orlando Ruff.
The office, which marks the 22nd nationwide for the civil litigation and insurance defense shop, will focus on serving employers and insurers headquartered or operating in California, including major league sports associations and franchises.
“We look forward to all that we’ll accomplish together in Orange County and for clients nationally,” said Goldberg Segalla’s managing partner, Richard Cohen.
Roberts has advised executives in a number of major league sports organizations, including members of the NFL, Major League Baseball, National Basketball Association and National Hockey League. He also regularly defends these clients in employment and labor-related matters on trial and appeal, including cases involving the issue of jurisdiction over out-of-state employers facing claims filed in California.
Mauras, who is a certified workers’ compensation specialist, has over a decade of experience counseling and defending California employers, insurers, and third-party administrators in workers’ compensation matters.
Aaron and Hardebeck counsel and defend employers, insurers and third-party administrators in workers’ compensation matters, and also focus a significant portion of their practice on handling workers’ compensation matters for major league sports organizations. Ruff advises and represents employers before the California Division of Workers’ Compensation.
Prior to beginning his legal career, Ruff played seven seasons in the NFL for the San Diego Chargers, New Orleans Saints and Cleveland Browns, amassing 344 career tackles over the course of 108 pro games.
“Orange County is a growing community in general. There is a significant need for legal representation within the area, and Goldberg Segalla has given me the platform to facilitate and assistant clients on a large basis, not only in California but potentially nationwide,” said Roberts.
