“We could have expanded massively last decade and made huge amounts of money, but if we had we would have had to slash and burn during the recession,” comments Farrer & Co senior partner James Furber (pictured), encapsulating the conservative outlook one would expect from a law firm whose clients include the Royal Family.

But private client-focused Farrers’ refusal to overstretch during the boom now finds the firm in a position of such relative strength that it has recently been behaving rather out of character. The firm has made a host of lateral hires from the City that has seen partner headcount grow by 20% since this time last year. “We seem to have become a first stop for disaffected City lawyers,” says Furber.
