  • Reviews put UK firms on alert for high-profile panel places

    The UK's leading law firms are set to compete for a raft of coveted panel roles as adviser reviews at Rio Tinto, Nomura and Ireland's National Asset Management Agency (NAMA) reach the advanced stages. Mining giant Rio Tinto is set to launch a global review of its panel relationships - overseen by group executive of legal and external affairs Debra Valentine - aimed at streamlining the number of firms it instructs.

  • Freshfields names new antitrust and competition group co-heads

    Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer has appointed new co-heads for its global competition, antitrust and trade practice. The firm has chosen Brussels and City-based partner John Davies and Duesseldorf managing partner Martin Klusman as the new co-leaders of the 250-lawyer group, with the duo succeeding incumbents David Aitman and Helmut Bergmann as of next week (15 September).

  • Mexican law firm becomes country's first to launch in London market

    Mexico's Jauregui Navarrete & Nader has become the first Mexican firm to launch an office in London. The office, which will be headed up by partner Yves Hayaux du Tilly, opened for business in the City on 1 July at 60 Lombard Street. The new base will provide advice on Mexican law to Jauregui's clients in London and Europe, while the firm is also aiming to identify business opportunities for its existing clients in the region.

  • Freshfields to ramp up US presence with move to new HQ in New York

    Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer is set to relocate its headquarters in New York in a move that will significantly expand the firm's presence in the city. The new office will be located on East 53rd Street at 601 Lexington - formerly known as the Citigroup Center - under a lease signed last week. The move, which will increase the firm's office capacity in New York by over 50%, is due to take place by the middle of 2011.

  • Reed Smith adds to global shipping practice with double hire

    Reed Smith has launched a shipping practice in New York with the hire of Holland & Knight partner Lars Forsberg. Forsberg, who was formerly based in Holland & Knight's New York office, joined Reed Smith earlier this month. He specialises in admiralty law, litigation and dispute resolution, with a particular focus on purchase and sale matters for commercial vessels and large private yachts.

  • Norton Rose hires Linklaters practice chief for Italy antitrust launch

    Norton Rose is set to launch an antitrust, regulatory and competition practice in Italy with the hire of Linklaters' competition and antitrust head in the country. Andrea Zulli, who was a managing associate in Linklaters' Milan base, will join Norton Rose's local office as a partner in the coming months. He relocated to the region from London in May 2009 to launch a competition and antitrust practice for Linklaters.

  • Cuatrecasas names new managing partners in London and New York

    Cuatrecasas Goncalves Pereira has appointed new managing partners for its London and New York offices. Finance partner Inigo Rubio has taken over the helm in the City, replacing Florentino Carreno and Enric Picanyol, who have spent four years as co-managing partners in the Iberian firm's London base.

  • Cleary takes top role for Brazilian oil firm on record $75bn share offering

    Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton is advising Brazilian oil and gas giant Petrobras on its plan to raise nearly $75bn (£49bn) in the world's largest-ever share sale, reports The Am Law Daily. The US firm is acting as issuer's counsel on the sale, which will finance investments in developing offshore oil fields.

  • Long-serving Slaughters litigator joins Eversheds in Hong Kong

    Eversheds has added a partner to its Hong Kong arm with the hire of former Slaughter and May litigator Mark Yeadon. Yeadon, who spent 22 years at Slaughters, including 20 in Hong Kong, becomes the fourth partner in Eversheds' Hong Kong disputes team. The office currently houses almost 30 lawyers, a number which the firm plans to grow to 50 in the next 12 months.

  • Stephenson Harwood adds partner duo with Travers and Wragges hires

    Stephenson Harwood has bulked up its City real estate arm with two lateral hires from Travers Smith and Wragge & Co. Neil Murray has joined Stephenson Harwood's real estate finance practice after 11 years as head of banking at Travers. He has been at the firm for the last 25 years. He specialises in property finance, acquisition finance, securitisation, projects, corporate lending and restructuring.
