  • Addleshaws recruits former DLA Piper finance partner for City base

    Addleshaw Goddard has bolstered its City arm with the hire of leveraged finance partner John Cutler. Cutler joins the firm this week (6 September) as a partner in the national firm's London banking practice, which sits within the finance and projects division. He formerly spent more than 15 years at DLA Piper, where he was a well-respected City partner, advising banks and financial institutions.

  • White & Case and Wragges add local lawyers in Paris push

    White & Case and Wragge & Co have both bulked up their Paris practices, hiring a number of local lawyers. White & Case has joined forces with local litigation boutique Beaussier & Associes, adding a team of two partners, one counsel and four associates. The tie-up gifts the US firm a white-collar practice in its Paris office.

  • International firms feel the pinch in Paris as UK practices post double-digit revenue drops

    Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom was the fastest-growing international firm by turnover in the French market last year, expanding its practice by 20%. Revenue at the US law firm's Paris practice stood at €26.4m (£22m) for the last financial year, up from €22m (£18.3m) last year, according to research carried out by Juristes Associes. The firm is now the 34th largest practice by turnover in the country. Skadden's performance bucks the overall trend for international firms in the region, which for the most part have seen sizable drops in turnover. Clifford Chance (CC), Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer and SJ Berwin all posted double-digit declines in revenue for the year.

  • BLP overhauls finance team as ex-RBS man takes helm

    Berwin Leighton Paisner (BLP) is shaking up its finance department, with ex-Linklaters partner Matthew Kellett appointed to head the practice. Kellett took over as head of the department last week (1 September), having joined BLP in April this year with a brief to develop the firm's structured finance capacity.

  • DLA brings in Camerons investment chief for City finance team

    DLA Piper has added to its City finance offering with the hire of CMS Cameron McKenna's investment funds practice head Gawain Hughes. Hughes joined the transatlantic law firm earlier this week (6 September) as the fourth partner in the investment funds team, headed by City partner David Williams.

  • Takeover surge prompts busy summer for deal finance teams

    Europe's leading deal finance teams are forecasting a revival in activity after advisers benefited from a recent flurry of debt-financed takeovers. Firms to have secured large acquisition finance mandates in recent weeks include Allen & Overy (A&O), Linklaters, Latham & Watkins and Clifford Chance (CC).

  • Channel 5 lays off legal chief in post-takeover redundancy round

    Channel 5's legal director has been made redundant, with a number of other legal jobs at risk following the purchase of the TV network by Richard Desmond's company Northern & Shell in July. Legal head Paul Chinnery was laid off along with six other directors in August, and is set to leave the channel at the end of October. As yet, no-one has been appointed to replace him.

  • Ashurst takes lead advisory role for buyout giant Candover on wind down

    Ashurst has taken a lead role on the wind down of listed buyout group Candover, which announced plans to return cash to investors last week (31 August), having failed to conclude a deal to sell its assets to Alberta Investment Management six weeks ago. Candover Investments said in the announcement of its first half results last week that it was set to conduct a sale of its portfolio in order to distribute value to investors.

  • SRA to reject law firm calls to allow early ABS investment deals

    The Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) is set to hold firm on the start date for Alternative Business Structures (ABS), despite calls from law firms to allow early agreements. In July last year the regulator stated that firms would be prohibited from signing agreements with outside investors ahead of 6 October 2011.

  • Expansive Ropes & Gray transfers LBO partner to London arm

    Ropes & Gray has relocated one of its Boston-based high-yield partners to bolster the firm's fledgling London office. Jane Rogers, who joined the firm's City arm on Monday (7 September), has switched offices as part of the firm's strategy to build its City-based bank finance and bond team.
