As a young attorney at Nelson Mullins, I appreciate the firm’s commitment to pro bono and appreciation for how pro bono service can help me develop in my practice. Recently, through our adult guardianship partnership with the Atlanta Legal Aid Society, I had the opportunity to help a mother bring her daughter home.

In January 2017, 36-year-old Chasdity suffered a stroke and brain aneurysm. She underwent several surgeries and was placed in a long-term care facility in a semi-conscious and oxygen-dependent state, requiring the use of a tracheal and feeding tube. Chasdity’s mother wanted her daughter to be released from the care facility, knowing she could receive more comfortable and higher quality care at home. Yet this mother was powerless to bring her daughter home without having a guardianship order in place.
