What are some of the department’s most satisfying successes of 2021, and why?
Our most satisfying case was achieving a class-action settlement with Health Insurance Innovations Inc. and its subsidiary, Health Plan Intermediaries Holdings LLC, on behalf of health insurance buyers who were sold fraudulent health insurance plans. Early in 2021, we achieved class certification in the matter, which is rare for cases involving RICO violations. Ultimately, this achievement motivated both parties to come to the table and reach an agreement that holds Health Plan Intermediaries Holdings accountable for leaving thousands of individuals with exorbitant medical bills after selling them fraudulent insurance.
