Sam Ross is a General Counsel to tech scale-ups. He trained at Olswang and qualified into their corporate team, then moved to Barclays to work within their Ops & Tech Legal function before moving into scale-ups.  He was WorldRemit’s first legal hire, building up their legal function and then moved to ComplyAdvantage to be their first GC.  He has just spent a year running an outsourced legal subscription service to multiple scale-ups at Stephenson Law and is shortly joining Remote.com as GC.

Below, Sam Ross reflects back on his career to date and shares the key lessons he wished he had been told when he first took up the helm of general counsel. He provides practical advice on how to successfully lead an in-house team at a fast-growth tech scale-up, including what point you decide to grow the team and how to create a succession plan. He also discusses how to embrace continuous change and shares why he thinks governance is going to be the next big challenge for in-house teams. CCA: Reflecting back on your career in-house, what are the key takeaways that you would offer a new GC?
