Longtime Citigroup Inc. general counsel Rohan Weerasinghe is retiring, and a new chief executive officer is taking the reins of the megabank on the heels of a particularly trying year.

Citi CEO Jane Fraser, the first woman to lead a major U.S. bank, announced Tuesday in a staff memo that Weerasinghe plans to retire by the end of the year. Fraser took over as Citi’s CEO earlier this month and is pushing to revive the bank, which has been grappling with financial woes and costly internal controls missteps.
