In a lawsuit filed in California on Aug. 11, a former employee claims that managers with online lending startup Social Finance Inc., known as SoFi, discriminated against women and mishandled loan applications.
The claims come at a time when allegations of sexual harassment and discrimination are piling on, particularly within Silicon Valley. Uber Technologies Inc. has been hit hard with accusations of a toxic workplace culture, and last week Google faced backlash after a male employee published a manifesto about why males are better suited to work as engineers. The plaintiff in the complaint against SoFi, Brandon Charles, who worked for the company for about three months this spring, allegedly reported misconduct by his employer and claims in the nine-page complaint filed in San Francisco Superior Court he was wrongfully terminated in retaliation. The San Francisco company has denied the claims.
