SAN FRANCISCO — It’s been a big month for the American Foundation for Equal Rights, the nonprofit launched in 2009 to undo California’s Proposition 8 ban on gay marriage.
It reveled in the ruling by the Ninth Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals, which became the first federal appeals court to strike down a state ban on same-sex marriage. And a week later, in its signature courtroom-meets-Hollywood style, AFER announced actors Kevin Bacon and John C. Reilly would join the likes of George Clooney and Jamie Lee Curtis for the West Coast premiere — and fundraising event — of the production “8,” a play based on the transcripts from the 2010 bench trial before former San Francisco U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker.
