Annual licensing fees for California lawyers would not increase in 2024 under the latest version of the state bar’s annual funding bill moving through the Legislature.

Amendments to SB 40 introduced this week would keep the base fee for active lawyers at $390, the same amount charged this year. The new bill language actually lists the fee at $391, but an aide to the bill’s author, Sen. Tom Umberg, D-Santa Ana, said the figure is a drafting error that will be corrected. Inactive lawyers would pay $97.40.
