Voters in Contra County County in Northern California’s East Bay region will decide on Tuesday whether to reelect Diana Becton as district attorney or her replace her with a colleague, Deputy District Attorney Mary Knox. Before taking office as the first Black district attorney in the county, Becton served as a Contra Costa County Superior Court judge for 22 years.

In an email interview with The Recorder, Becton shared her thoughts on police union campaign donations against her and her priorities for the office going forward if she secures reelection. The answers have been lightly edited for style.
