An Orange County federal jury on Friday convicted an inmate of plotting to kill five officials, including a judge, in the fraud case that sent him to prison, the second verdict in a case marred by the defendant’s mental health and his unsuccessful push to represent himself.

John Arthur Walthall, 66, is scheduled to complete his initial 14-year sentence in 2026, but he now faces substantially more time after federal jurors in the Central District of California convicted him of a single count of solicitation to commit a crime of violence.
