For four years, Xavier Becerra has been the oft-repeated “tip of the spear” in California’s resistance to President Donald Trump, filing 106 legal actions against the Republican’s administration according to his own mid-November tally.

His identity as a leading Trump nemesis is about to come to an end, however—and not just for Becerra but for most Democratic attorneys general across the country. With Trump’s defeat, the Republican legal target is leaving. Becerra may be, too. Becerra is often mentioned in national media reporting as a potential Biden cabinet appointee or a possible successor to Sen. Kamala Harris. He has declined publicly to tamp down such chatter.
