Internet penetration in Africa currently stands at almost 40% per capita, according to Internet World Stats - bearing in mind this was at zero little more than a decade ago, when the first undersea cables appeared on the continent.
Prior to that, only the residential elite and certain businesses had access to landline telephony, and to expensive satellite services for any form of local or international data communication.
