On Aug. 23, the Lightning—a group of lawyers and other law firm professionals from Center City law firms Montgomery McCracken Walker & Rhoads, Ballard Spahr, Abramson & Denenberg, Capehart Scatchard and Zarwin Baum DeVito Kaplan Schaer Toddy—defeated Morgan, Lewis & Bockius by a score of 8-2 to secure the championship of the competitive division of the Philadelphia Lawyers Softball League. The win marked the Lightning’s fifth straight championship in five years. In reaching the finals, the Lightning defeated Dechert and Berger Montague in playoff rounds one and two. Lightning regulars include co-captains Steve Pachman and Tom Bruno, as well as Jose Vidal, Daniel Pope, Ben Bruno, Dylan Henry, Michael Witsch, CJ Scatena, Brianna Vinci, Kacie Kergides, Elizabeth Catalano and Joey Samuel.

The Pennsylvania Bar Association workers’ compensation law section is scheduled to present its Irvin Stander Memorial Award to Matthew L. Wilson, a partner at Martin Law in Philadelphia, during its fall meeting on Oct. 4 and 5 at the Hershey Lodge in Hershey. The award is named in honor of the late Judge Irvin Stander and is presented to an attorney whose dedication to the administration of workers’ compensation law, and whose professionalism and regard for clients and colleagues, serves as an example to others. Practicing Pennsylvania workers’ compensation law exclusively for more than 30 years, Wilson began his career representing agencies with the city of Philadelphia, major insurance carriers and self-insured corporations. After working with two major defense firms, he began focusing on protecting the rights of injured workers in 1993. Wilson has served on the PBA workers’ compensation law section council since 2007 and is a past chair of the section. He is currently co-chair of the section’s bench/bar committee, a statewide group of lawyers and judges that makes policy and procedure recommendations. He is a member of the Pennsylvania and Philadelphia trial lawyers associations, as well as the workplace injury litigation group.
