Police use of Wi-Fi searching technology to find a man who had been downloading child pornography by “mooching” off of a neighbor’s Internet connection isn’t a Fourth Amendment violation, the Third Circuit has ruled.

Richard Stanley, who was arrested for having 144 images and videos depicting child pornography on his laptop, had argued that the police officer’s use of the technology, branded “MoocherHunter,” without a warrant would mean that the evidence collected from his computer as a result should be suppressed. The technology finds the location of a computer that is pilfering wireless Internet signals.
