An insurer must provide coverage for in-school, autism-related services, despite a general exclusion saying services would not be covered in schools, the state Superior Court has ruled.

Act 62 ensures that health insurance policies cover the treatment of autism spectrum disorders, including behavioral analysis, which is an autism-related service, the court held in its Nov. 13 decision in Burke v. Independence Blue Cross. The portion of the act regarding treatment of autism spectrum disorders controls, limiting the act’s general-exclusions exception, not the other way around, the court said.
