In the world of conflict resolution, we like to say that conflict is normal and inevitable because all individuals are unique and bring various perspectives to their relationships. Our differences can create opportunities for those involved in a conflict to learn and broaden their understanding of themselves, of the situation at hand, of the larger sociocultural context in which the conflict occurred, and even of the world itself.

There are many ways for individuals to approach interpersonal conflict, depending on the type of conflict and the relationship one has with the other party. Our society tends to address conflict through the legal system, which often ignores the larger context within which conflict occurs. But there are other, more productive, ways to deal with conflict.
