The following has been edited lightly for length and style.

The Legal Intelligencer: Tell us about your background, where you went to law school, what firms you have practiced at, and areas of law you focus on.

Chesley Lightsey: I graduated from Temple Law in 2005. I spent the majority of the last 17 years at the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office, where I served as the chief of the homicide/non-fatal shooting unit and the juvenile division while in the office. My area of focus was criminal law.

The Legal: What is one major thing about your career experience that most qualifies you for this position, and why?

Lightsey: I have handled jury trials at the very highest level of criminal law. I understand the rules of court and will make sure that all matters before me are tried fairly with all rules followed, ensuring a just outcome for all parties.

The Legal: What is the main reason Pennsylvania voters should pick you?

Lightsey: I am rated as “highly recommended” by the Philadelphia Bar Association. The bar’s review of my candidacy was exceptionally thorough, and they have given me their highest rating. Voters who value judges with experience, compassion and a sense of fairness should vote for me.

The Legal: What will be your approach to moving matters efficiently through the case management system?

Lightsey: I will start my courtroom on time, every single day. My court staff will be trained to communicate with all attorneys regarding their case status days prior to the case listing. I believe that all litigants deserve to have their day in court without unnecessary delay. I will work hard to make sure that happen for cases in my courtroom.

The Legal: What would you say to voters regarding your plans to ensure the equal administration of justice for all people?

Lightsey: I have dedicated my legal career to public service and have worked hard to build a reputation as an attorney who treats everyone fairly, is above board in all my dealings and plays by the rules. As the head of the homicide unit, I made difficult decisions about cases every day. I never took that responsibility lightly. As a judge, I will be ever mindful of the impact that my decisions have on the people who come before me. I will continue to treat each person I encounter with dignity and respect no matter their current circumstance or background.

The Legal: Where can voters go for more information about you?
