Plaintiff Gerald Groff is a Sunday Sabbath observer whose religious beliefs dictate that Sunday is meant for worship and rest. Groff’s inability to receive a reasonable accommodation from his employer led the U.S. Supreme Court to accept a petition for writ of certiorari. In the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, the case is cited Groff v. DeJoy, 35 F.4th 162 (3d Cir. May 25, 2022) (Shwartz, C.J.)

Groff, a rural carrier associate (RCA) had informed his employer, the U.S. Postal Service (USPS), that he was unable to work on Sundays. The USPS offered to find employees to swap shifts with him, but on more than 20 Sundays, no co-worker would swap, and Groff did not work. Groff was disciplined and ultimately left the USPS.
