The Pennsylvania Health Law Project (PHLP) exists to protect and advance the health care rights of low-income individuals through free legal services, community education and systems advocacy. This year (2023) we’re celebrating our 30th year of incorporation as a nonprofit organization. I’ve led PHLP for nearly 14 years, nearly half of that time of our incorporation, and it has been an absolutely privilege. I’m using this column to share some of what we do.

At PHLP, we are really good at fighting to get health care to low-income individuals and families. This work is vitally important. We work to make the health industry and policymakers more attuned to what people want and need—and more accountable for making it happen. We are experts on Medicaid, the joint federal-state program that currently provides health care coverage to 3.6 million Pennsylvanians.
