The U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization to overturn Roe v. Wade has the LGBTQ+ community alarmed that their rights are in jeopardy and rightfully so as states have already begun citing Dobbs as the legal basis for limiting transgender health care and same-sex sexual intimacy rights. As we transition through this new America, it is imperative to shed light on the full breadth of Dobbs’ impact and discuss the intersection of reproductive and LGBTQ+ rights that have been impacted.

First and foremost, it’s important to note that the Dobbs decision is not solely a women’s issue. While it is often framed as such, specifically, one that affects cisgender women, LGBTQ+ folks have abortions too. In states with bans, it can lead to forced births for transgender men and nonbinary individuals and as a result they may be forced to see their bodies change in ways they would never have otherwise allowed and be treated as women by health care providers and society at large. Plus, the Dobbs decision increases the risk of other rights—like marriage equality, hormone therapy, employment rights and IVF—being taken away.
