The Pennsylvania Supreme Court has ruled that it is powerless to loosen what it called “severe constraints” on courts’ ability to review grievance arbitration awards involving police officers and firefighters.

In City of Pittsburgh v. Fraternal Order of Police, Fort Pitt Lodge No. 1, the justices unanimously reversed a ruling by a three-judge panel of the Commonwealth Court, which had affirmed an Allegheny County trial court’s ruling tossing out an arbitration award.
