By picking up 55 lawyers from a New York intellectual property boutique, Houston-based Andrews Kurth has obtained more depth in New York and Washington, D.C., more muscle in the Texas and national IP markets, and heft enough to help the firm fend off takeover overtures, industry observers said of the firm’s deal with Kenyon & Kenyon.

“What’s clear is they want to remain an independent brand. It’s a strong Texas law firm brand. They needed to get more critical mass in New York, that’s for sure. That’s an interesting maneuver,” said Robert Kinney, founder and president of Kinney Recruiting in Austin.
