On Sept. 28, an online dating site agreed to pay $1.5 million to settle claims that it wrongfully billed customers. The class action suit alleged that True.com, an Internet dating site owned and operated by TrueBeginnings LLC, refused to honor users’ cancelation requests. The suit was filed by Thomas Wong, who said he signed up for a free trial membership in August 2006. He claimed he contacted the company several times to cancel his membership once it expired, but he continued to receive bills. He accused True.com of unjust enrichment and conversion, as well as violations of the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices Act. True.com denied it had a policy of refusing to honor cancelation requests, but it agreed to settle the matter by creating a fund for members of the class.
