Two former judges voiced opposing views on April 27 as the Texas House Committee on Judiciary and Civil Jurisprudence weighed a resolution that would create a seven-member committee to consider impeaching Court of Criminal Appeals Presiding Judge Sharon Keller.

Michol O’Connor, a former justice on Houston’s 1st Court of Appeals, told committee members that what Keller allegedly did in Michael Richard’s case — refusing to keep the CCA clerk’s office open past its normal closing time so his lawyers could file a motion for a stay of execution — was “outrageous.” Keller shortened Richard’s life by eight months, O’Connor said.
