Several U.S. Supreme Court justices appeared skeptical Wednesday of reviving a retaliatory arrest lawsuit from a former Texas city councilwoman who claims she spent the day in jail for criticizing the city manager.

The case stems from the 2019 arrest of a then-72-year-old councilwoman for the small south Texas city of Castle Hills. Sylvia Gonzalez’s arrest on suspicion of stealing a government document followed an investigation into whether she intentionally placed a petition in her binder during a council meeting months earlier.
