Shale oil producers have brought in Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher, Kirkland & Ellis and other Big Law firms to defend against a growing number of lawsuits accusing them of conspiring to keep gas prices high since early 2021.

Five lawsuits, all filed within the past month, name eight companies that use hydraulic fracking to drill oil, such as Chesapeake Energy and Pioneer Natural Resources. They allege that the defendants have conspired with the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, or OPEC, to inflate oil prices, leading to higher prices at the pump.
