The movement to bring gender pay equity to the American workforce has been around for more than 50 years, but in the last two has hit a seemingly fever pitch. Women are filing multimillion-dollar class action lawsuits against their employers, more than half of the United States has moved to enact some form of tougher pay equity legislation and the concept of pay equality was a focal point of the presidential election. ALM wanted to take a closer look at why these issues are bubbling up so intensely now—more than 50 years since the federal Equal Pay Act of 1963 attempted to address the issue—and what the legal, financial and insurance industries are doing about it. Along the way, we learned some interesting facts and heard some fascinating stories about the real-world impact of gender discrimination in the workplace.

In this package you will read about what states are doing to beef up equal pay laws and how the Obama administration and the EEOC are working to make a bigger impact at the federal level – including a new plan for the EEOC to collect more detailed pay data along gender lines from any employer with more than 100 employees.
