The bizarre treatment of a patient by Seattle neuropsychiatrist Dr. Donald L. Dudley, who allegedly used powerful drugs to "erase" an autistic man's brain, has yielded a $2.1 million judgment for negligence. The case is an extreme example of the brave new world of mental health malpractice litigation, in which plaintiffs' attorneys are filling the breach of a mental health system that could allow someone like Dudley to operate unchecked.

Washington has become the second state, after New Mexico, to include Indian law as a topic on the bar exam. A push is underway to add the subject to exams in Arizona, Idaho, Oklahoma and Oregon. Oregon Doctor's $22M Award Against Drug Maker Stands

The Oregon Supreme Court has refused to review a $22.5 million punitive judgment awarded to a doctor who said he'd been harmed by a drug company's failure to warn of possible toxic antibiotic interactions with an asthma medication. The doctor claimed Key Pharmaceuticals' fraud kept him from diagnosing a toxic drug interaction in a patient. The judgment may be the largest-ever recovery for a third party in a personal injury action.
