Two Major Business Cases on D.C. Circuit's Fall Docket

The cases to be heard by the D.C. Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals in its fall term once again point to the court's central role in deciding novel legal, business and social issues, many of which have a national impact. On the schedule for upcoming arguments are two important business cases: one involving the recording industry's efforts to stop Internet piracy, the other a suit against the government by a major law firm that lost out on a lucrative government contract.

High Court Gains Low-Profile Counsel

Scott Harris` next job is out of sight - literally and figuratively. On June 10, Harris, an assistant U.S. attorney in Washington, D.C., takes over as counsel to the U.S. Supreme Court - one of the least visible but arguably most interesting and varied in-house counsel jobs in the District. Court, Bar, Brace For McCain-Feingold Argument

On most September days, the majestic U.S. Supreme Court chamber is empty except for the occasional lecture given to tourists about the architecture and history of the courtroom. But on Sept. 8 the high court will be packed to the rafters as the justices hold an extraordinary four-hour session to consider the constitutionality of the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act of 2002. Seating is so tight that lawyers arguing in the case will be restricted to five guests each in the courtroom.

Associates Survey 2008

Smaller firms often outscore larger ones on our annual survey of midlevel job satisfaction. It may be because a more intimate atmosphere breeds happiness. Maybe it's because associates have more responsibility. Perhaps it's because they have a better chance of making partner. In these charts, firms are grouped roughly according to size. In the first category are firms whose annual gross revenues are too low to qualify for the Am Law 200. These are the smallest firms that took part in our survey. In the second category are Am Law Second Hundred firms?numbers 101-200 on the most recent Am Law 200 survey (July.) In the final category are firms that appear on our most recent Am Law 100 (May) or Global 100 (October 2007) survey. For a full methodology, click here.
