Poor Prospects Seen for Bills That Ease Up on Home Mortgage Lenders

Consumers appear safe, at least for now, from bills in the hopper that would partially defang New Jersey's law against predatory mortgage lending practices. The legislation is aimed at loosening some of the strictures in the newly effective Home Ownership Security Act, which was hailed as a national model of protection against abusive lending practices. However, despite early momentum, the bills likely will not hobble through the lame duck session that concludes Jan. 13.
