Judge Slashes Legal Fees in Paxil Case

When federal judge John R. Padova took a close look at the fee request in a mega class action antitrust suit involving the anti-depressant drug Paxil, he decided the lawyers were simply asking for too much. The full $30 million they requested, Padova said, would represent more than 23 times their hourly billing rates. He cut the request by one-third and awarded the lawyers $20 million, noting that it still resulted in a multiplier of more than 15.
