Merck: Vioxx Consultant Report May Be Misunderstanding

The report that a Texas lawyer leading many Vioxx lawsuits was courting a prominent cardiologist and major plaintiff witness in the first federal Vioxx case may have been a misunderstanding, the Merck spokesman who had made the statement said Thursday. Mark Lanier, who won a $253 million judgment against Merck last year, said he hasn't asked Dr. Eric Topol to become a consultant and that Topol is still working at the hospital, which is widely known for cardiac treatment and research.
