Divorce American Style

When Mansur Maqsudi divorced the daughter of Uzbek dictator Islam Karimov, he found himself in a bind. Maqsudi had operated a lucrative Coca-Cola bottling plant, but after his marriage collapsed, he claims Uzbekistan seized his share of the business and transferred control to a Swiss company in which his ex-wife has a significant interest. His attorney -- Stuart Newberger of Crowell & Moring -- turned to a rarely used federal procedure to fight back, opening the door to U.S.-style discovery in the process.
