Ames Nolan didn't know what hit him. On a bright June day in 1997, Nolan, a retired telephone engineer, was hosing down the underside of his running Lawn-Boy lawn mower when a lug nut came loose from the machine. The nut shot out from the mower, ricocheted off the pavement, and smashed the second knuckle of Nolan's index finger.
