A federal judge in Newark last Monday defiantly refused to disqualify himself from a multibillion-dollar asbestos bankruptcy case and asked the 3rd Circuit to reject the "double-dealing" and "hypocritical" gamesmanship that he said underlies the recusal motion. In a 100-page opinion, U.S. District Judge Alfred Wolin urged the circuit court to uphold judicial independence rather than cave in to creditors who want him out.
