Random House, Brown's publisher, fended off a copyright suit in Britain, but went on the offensive against American author Lewis Perdue, who claims that Brown stole from his work. Perdue's battle started with a letter and escalated. Now Perdue believes that a footnote in a district court opinion hints at an issue that's contentious enough to bring him to the Supreme Court.
