In contracts between a client and another party such as a manufacturer, contractor, consultant or tenant, attorneys often add "hold harmless" indemnification language to protect their client. For summer associates, size does matter

Small is beautiful, according to the respondents to The American Lawyer's Summer Associates Survey. Though the summers liked big firms, their evaluations show they liked life at small to midsize firms better. Students craved juicy assignments, friendly offices and lots of attention, and the firms that best met these needs tended to be medium-size, with smaller summer programs. Whether big or small, firms that did well in the survey focused on training, mentoring and involving summers in projects.

Intervenor Could Alter Gay Marriage Cases

The constitutional fight over same-sex marriages in San Francisco Superior Court reaches a fork in the road this week. The future of two recently consolidated cases will be affected by whether a Christian legal advocacy group is allowed to intervene to defend state marriage laws alongside Attorney General Bill Lockyer. On Monday, in a joint brief, lawyers for the city and same-sex couples fighting for gay and lesbian marriages vigorously opposed the Alliance Defense Fund's request to intervene.
